A few years back, in the early days of my radio show, I had Ron Santo on as a guest. I was still a Cubs fan and it was just after the Veterans Committee had failed Santo again. Towards the end of the interview, I lost my objectivity completely and told him that Cubs fans everywhere loved him. I got mocked mercilessly for “marking out” on that one.
I’m glad I said it.
Ron Santo loved the Cubs like we should all love something. Listening to him call games was an experience in passion. His infamous Brant Brown “oh no!” was how we all felt at that moment. He was our voice in the booth.
I lost my passion for the Cubs back in ‘06, but Ron never did. I always had this dream that Harry Caray and Ron Santo called a ballgame together. Maybe next season they will. Maybe some season I’ll hear it.
